Muttur Jetty expanded for larger ferries by P. Krishnasamy The Ministry of Port Development and Shipping began rehabilitation work on the Muttur Jetty last week to accommodate larger ferries and provide a better service to commuters travelling between Trincomalee and Muttur across the Koddiyar Bay. The work undertaken at a cost of Rs. 10 million is expected to be completed in eight months. The Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) will operate larger ferry-steamers for the benefit of about 1000 commuters every day, once the work is completed. The reconstruction work was inaugurated by Minister of Port Development, Shipping, Eastern Development and Muslim Religious Affairs and leader of the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC), Rauff Hakeem, on August 5. The Minister also opened a memorial plaque on that occasion. The existing jetty is in a dilapidated state. Travel by the ferry-steamer between Trincomalee and Muttur across the Koddiyar Bay is very much cheaper and less time consuming than the circuitous route via Kantalai. Commuters, specially elders and pregnant mothers, faced difficulties in boarding the ferry due to the bad state of the jetty. It has also not been possible for ferries of larger sizes to anchor. The jetty would be extended up to ninety feet from the present length of twenty-six feet. |
