Convention on the future of the mentally retarded in Sri Lanka The Ceylon Association for the Mentally Retarded; a pioneer in the field of Mental Retardation in Sri Lanka, incorporated by Act of Parliament No. 10 of 1071, an approved charity under Section 31(9)(9) of the Inland Revenue Act No. 28 of 1979, and a member of the Asian Federation for the Mentally Retarded, which hosted the Asian Conference on Mental Retardation held in Colombo in 1995, will be holding a convention on the "Future of the Mentally Retarded in Sri Lanka" at Nisansala Centre, Tudella, Ja-Ela, on September 6. The topics for group discussion are: 1. Day centre vs living in / community awareness / how to identify MR persons. 2. Training subjects and teaching methodology to be adopted as a standard in Sri Lanka. 3. Partnership and CAMR's role. 4 Support services and health care. The participants will comprise of members from CAMR is 31 affiliates and representatives of other organisations with similar interests and objectives. A novel feature of this convention is that the inputs to the decisions reached by consensus will be provided by participants from various parts of the country and thus would to a great extent reflect the social, cultural, religious and economic ambience of the country, essential for the care and wellbeing of the MR persons in Sri Lanka, who account for about 3 per cent of the population (6 lakhs). |
