'Sam's Story' nominated for International Literary Award `Sam's Story' a winner of the 2001 Gratiaen Prize has been accepted as an entry for the 2003 International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award. The prestigious award carries a prize of 100,000 Euros. The winner will be announced in May 2002, organisers said. The book written by Captain Elmo Jayawardene is published by Vijitha Yapa Publications. It is already in its second print, less than one year since it was first published. A spokesman for Vijitha Yapa Publication said, the company is proud to have published this outstanding book, and hopes its success will encourage many other Sri Lankan authors. 'Sam's Story' is narrated by Sam, an illiterate houseboy born in a village too remote for maps, brought to work in a town house where he finds momentary happiness in a life muddied by difficult days and painful moments. It is about the tears he shed and the days he wished he could forget, of the people he loved and the others he loved to hate. Author Elmo Jayawardene is a Sri Lankan who is now flying intercontinental jumbo jets for Singapore International Airlines and this is his first literary work. |
