New Crimes Division to replace CDB

by JAYAMPATHY JAYASINGHE

The Crime Detective Bureau (CDB) which was abolished by the PA regime in January 2000 will now be replaced by the Colombo Crime Division (CCD) to quell the rising tide of crime in the country.

Interior Minister John Amaratunga will declare open the new Crime Division at No 214, Kolonnawa Road, Dematagoda tomorrow. The minister who directed the re-establishment of the Crimes Division said that such a division would help detection and prevention of crime in the city of Colombo.

The former CDB which was housed at Gregory's Road, Colombo 07 had been making steady progress in detecting crime at the time it was closed down in January 2001. After its closure, incidents of crime had been investigated by crimes divisions of the respective police stations in Colombo.

DIG Colombo Bodhi Liyanage said that the creation of the new Colombo Crimes Division will assist in the detection of major crimes such as murder and robbery committed by underworld gangs. The Crime Division which will function under the overall charge of DIG, Colombo, Bodhi Liyanage is divided into three sections viz, Colombo North, Colombo South and the Operation Division. Each unit will be headed by an Assistant Supdt. of Police and a Supdt. of Police who will assist the DIG, Colombo, in day-to-day operations.

The CCD will have special divisions such as supervision and monitoring of registered criminals throughout the country, a data bank, a Women and Children's Bureau, registration of domestic servants, homicide detection, a photographic gallery of suspects, detection of organised crime and detection of terrorists activities.

The CCD will function under an OIC and 40 policemen who will investigate special criminal cases referred to them by the DIG (Colombo.)
