Lankan PM arrives in India's southern IT city

HYDERABAD, India, Aug 24 (AFP) - Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe reached the southern IT city of Hyderabad yesterday as part of a three-day visit to India.

Wickremesinghe will have a one-on-one meeting with Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, who was due to host a lunch for him, the Press Trust of India news agency said. There was no structured agenda for the Prime Minister's meeting with Naidu, officials said. After Hyderabad, Wickremesinghe was scheduled to leave for India's IT capital Bangalore in the evening.

On Friday, the visiting Prime Minister said in Madras that he would welcome help from any country, including the United States and India, to bring peace to his nation. "We welcome the American efforts and in fact, we welcome contributions from any country for working towards peace," Wickremesinghe said.

ANCL's fifth NJDP on Thursday

The fifth jak planting ceremony of the National Jak Development Project (NJDP) will be held at the Institute of Technical Education, Waidya Road, Dehiwela on Thursday, August 29. The ceremony is organised by the students and the staff of the Institute, under the guidance of Acting Director D. M. K. Dissanayeka.

The Chairman of NJDP Bandula Padmakumara, Editorial and Marketing Director of ANCL and the Secretary of NJDP, Sarath Amarakoon, Chief Administrative Officer (ANCL) will also participate.

ENVIROTEC 2002

As a part of the State Environmental Initiative (SEI) between Sri Lanka and the State of Arizona (AZ), USAID/United States Asia Environmental Partnership (US-AEP) in its promotion of the transfer of US developed technology and experience to Asia has arranged a leading group of environmental product and service providers from State of Arizona USA to visit Sri Lanka between September 16 to 19.

In relation to this visit, Small and Medium Enterprise Developers (a project of the Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Sri Lanka (FCCISL) and the Friedrich Nauman Stifftung - (FNst) in association with USAID/US - AEP will organise 'ENVIROTEC 2002' an exhibition on products and services for environmental and energy management on September 17 and 18 at the Holiday Inn Colombo. ENVIROTECH 2002 will feature technological presentations, seminars and one to one business meeting by participating Arizona and Sri Lanka companies.

'Daily News' staffer's mother dies

Nanda Gunatilleke, mother of 'Daily News' staff journalist Nadira, passed away on Friday. Nanda, who retired as English teacher from Alubowila MV, Bandaragama, was the wife of late Mr. Ervin Gunatilleka, a teacher at Arukgoda MV.

She leave behind her only child Nadira and the funeral will take place today, Sunday, Aug. 25 at the Bandaragama cemetery.

Appeal

Vishwa Kaveeshwara at 207/1, Weerasekera Mawatha, Divulapitiya, Boralesgamuwa, is critically affected by the Thalasaemia disease.

The doctors treating him at Sri Jayawardenapura Hospital say that medicine desferioxamine needed for treatment requires roughly Rs. 14,000 per month. A further Rs. 37,000 for an infusion pump.

The parents appeal to the generous public for help to save the life of their son.

Mrs. Ramani Perera (43) of No. 207/1-E/1, Wilimbula Radawana is suffering from heart ailment and had undergone a heart operation once, has been advised to undergo a further heart surgery in Apollo Hospital, to save her life. The cost of the operation would be around Rs. 375,000. She appeals to the generous public to help her. Those willing to make their contribution should send money to A/c.
