Isipathana International 'Sevens' the draw

Sixteen teams (including eight foreign teams) have been selected for Isipathana 50th anniversary celebration "Rugby Sevens", which has put Sri Lankan schools rugby on the International map. Isipathana has organised the first ever Asian school sponsored rugby Tournament for Schools to be held on September 7 and 8 at the CR & FC grounds.

Speaking at the draw held at Grand Oriental Hotel, the Chairman of the Organising Committee, Dilroy Fernando said that in two weeks time it will be a grand occasion for the Isipathana College Old Boys and present boys headed by their energetic Principal Upali Gunasekera when they host as many as eight foreign schoolboy teams plus eight local teams for the first ever International schools' Rugby 7's Tournament 2002.

The sixteen teams were drawn into four groups by foreign dignitaries representing the participating countries. In Group A are English College Dubai, St. Anthony's, Katugastota, New South Wales Country Junior Rugby Football Union Team and Royal College, Colombo. In Group B are Sutton and Epsom RFU from England, Vidyartha College, Kandy, Brighton Football Club(England), and hosts Isipathana. Group C consists of St. Peter's Colombo, a team from Thailand, Thurstan College, Colombo and Rugby Football Centre(Doha,RFC in Qatar. Group D consists of Wesley College, Colombo, Lloyd McDermott Rugby Development Team from Australia, Combined Southern Province team and VVA-Podmoskovie(Monina, Russia).

Isipathana rugby, which has been on the top rung over the years ,has produced some outstanding players like Hisham Abdeen and Dilroy Fernando, the present Chairman of the organising Committee, to name just two of them.

The Organising Committee appointed M/S Sharky the professional event Company headed by Chandrishan Perera to handle the management of the tournament. The following technical delegates will act as Referees:

John Wale(England), Jonathan Caplan (South Africa), Pornchai (Thailand), Brat Saxon (New Zealand) and the only International Lady Referee, Rachel Sara Allan.

In addition three local Referees will blow the whistle, namely Nizam Jamaldeen, Aruna Jayasinghe and Anil Jayasinghe.

Sponsors for the tournament will be Sri Lankan Airlines(official carrier).
