RCGC final - Rusi Captain vs Alain Gyi

by LAL GUNASEKERA

Several times past winner Rusi Captain and the young consistent Alain Gyi will battle it out for the Royal Colombo Golf Club Championship today (Sunday) in the 36-hole final to be worked out in two sessions at 7.30 a.m. and 1.30 p.m. at the Ridgeways. In yesterday's semi-finals defending champion Amrith de Soysa was beaten by Alain Gyi 3 and 2 at the 16th Hole, while Rusi Captain beat Stuart Richie 2-up.

De Soysa who returned to the island after a remarkable performance at the World Junior Championship in Scotland and a coaching stint at the David Leadbetter School in the USA had to readjust to the local conditions and was taken right upto the 19th Hole before beating 14-year-old Mithum Nandasena, son of ace golfer, Nandasena Perera earlier.

Richie played here during the 1980s and returned from Scotland and is playing well. He reached the semi-finals comfortably but had a scare in the opening match when young Avanka Herath played brilliant golf to be one over gross par on the front 9 but the pressure was too much and the youngsters game deteriorated. Earlier 15-year-old Sanjay Gunawardene who had returned after competing at the Mercedez Benz Asian finals in Australia scored an upset win over Arjun Fernando and in a "sudden death" play off managed to pull off a win at the 19th hole.

There was also an unusual occurrence not encountered before in the Nimal Perera vs Chutti Mansoor match. The RCGC is no doubt the only course which has a train running through it. When Perera had hit his shot on the 7th fairway the ball was heading out of bounds but it hit the passing train and came back onto the fairway. This rattled Mansoor who hit the ball "out of bounds" and Perera went on to win the Hole - courtesy of the train.
