Grand Hotel-SriLankan Airlines Golf Classic Sept. 20-22

by PELHAM JURIANSZ

The annual Grand Hotel-Sri Lankan Airlines Golf Classic organised by the Grand Hotel, Nuwara Eliya and the Nuwara Eliya Golf Club and sponsored by SriLankan Airlines, will tee off at the Nuwara Eliya Golf Course on September 20 (Poya), 21 and 22.

The idea of golf in Nuwara Eliya was thought in an effort to promote Nuwara Eliya golfing and Nuwara Eliya itself.

Co-sponsors for the tournament are Prestige Automobiles, Dialog GSM, Hatton National Bank, Golden Key Credit Card, and Dilmah Tea.

This 3-day tournament held for the second successive year will permit amateur golfers to prove their golfing prowess in ladies and men's events to be conducted in 2 separate divisions for each group; participants have the option of entering either division 'A' (handicaps of 0-24 & 0-16 for Ladies and Men respectively) or Division 'B' (handicaps of 25-45 & 17-28 respectively).

These events will be carried out on a "Stableford competition format", open to all amateur golfers with a valid Club, USGA or LGU handicap. Winners in the men's divisions will receive air tickets to London, while the winners of the Women's Division receive return air tickets to Singapore, courtesy of SriLankan Airlines.

In addition, a stableford competition will also be held for juniors(boys and girls) aged 17 years and a younger with handicaps of 15-28; and novices aged 16 years and younger will be awarded for putting, chipping, the longest drive and the shortest time on the 1st hole. Additional prizes are up for grabs for the longest drive and closest to the pin (men/women/juniors).

About 150 golfers are expected to enter the competition and those interested in participating in this Tournament are required to register at the Royal Colombo Golf Club or the Nuwara Eliya Golf Club on or before September 19, while those wishing to make room reservations and make use of the family discounts are advised to call the Grand Hotel on 422518/9 or 422663 without any delay to avoid disappointment.

It is hoped that this tournament will be open, in the future, to foreigners especially Indians as SriLankan Airlines has a direct flight to Bangalore too.
