35 arrested ahead of Bangladesh opposition protests: report

DHAKA, Aug 24 (AFP) At least 35 opposition activists were arrested ahead of Saturday's planned anti-government protests in the Bangladeshi capital, a report said Saturday.

The Prothoim Alo daily said those rounded up were members of the opposition Awami League of Sheikh Hasina Wajed.

Sheikh Hasina is scheduled to speak at a rally later Saturday and lead a march to her assassinated father's residence, now a museum.

Her father, the nation's founder Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, was killed in a 1975 coup along with most of the family in that house.

The party said it was keeping the route of the march secret to prevent police erecting barricades.

Sheikh Hasina has already warned that activists would stage a sit-in demonstration and call a general strike if police obstruct the march.

Police said security would be tightened for the protest as residents braced for possible violence.

Sheikh Hasina has accused Prime Minister Khaleda Zia's Islamist-allied government of resorting to fresh "torture, atrocities, harassment and repression" by arresting members of her party earlier in the week.
