Why starve when jak is around?
NJDPs planting ceremony today by Vimukthi Fernando The National Jak Development Project's (NJDP) 12th jak planting ceremony will be held at the Headquarters of the Gajaba Regiment of the Sri Lanka Army, Senapura, Anuradhapura, at 9.00 a.m. today. Over 50 jak saplings will be planted at the camp premises today, which will then be taken care of by the Gajaba regiment. The ceremony is organised jointly by the NJDP and the Gajaba regiment under the directive of Major K.P.A.P.N. Piyatissa. Commanding Officer of the Gajaba Regiment, Major Samantha Jayasundera will be the chief guest of the occasion. Officials of the Sevana Lotteries, sponsors of the NJDP and officials of ANCL are also scheduled to participate at the ceremony. Fifty jak saplings will also be planted and 200 saplings distributed at the Rajarata University of Sri Lanka, Mihintale on Tuesday (19), at the 13th planting ceremony of NJDP. The ceremony is to mark the volleyball championship tournaments organised by the Management Faculty of the university. An annual event promoting goodwill amongst students and lecturers from different universities, undergraduates from nine universities will compete at this tournament, which will be attended by the Vice Chancellor and officials of Sevana Lotteries and ANCL. More planting projects The planting season, which began in September continues and planting ceremonies are being conducted throughout the island. About 2,000 jak saplings in good condition are available at a nursery in Talawatte, Matugama.
