“Act of Spout” - Chaminda Gomes, Sri Lanka - Colour Certificate of Excellence

A picture says a thousand words, and robs a thousand emotions. Since that mystery bug called the shutter-bug raided the world, it has had the hardiest and steeliest among men and women surrendering to its magic. And the power to capture the unexpected unexpectedly. With comparisons in light, shadow - and blends of calm or angry shades. With images.

What exactly is the power of the photograph? Or the photographer? Is it the image itself, the emotion it gnashes out, or the story stolen by the photographer and stored in the photograph? Until you, the viewer, pulls it out with your feelings, your background, your life story and your whole "cultural baggage." And the spirit of the picture becomes your story, your life statement, your choice between light and dark - and life and death.

“An architect’s vision” - Gritakumar E. Chitty, Sri Lanka - Colour Certificate of Excellence

Sounds simple. But come to Lionel Wendt Memorial Art Centre on November 23 and 24 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and see how brilliantly a few of the world's best photographers, succeeded in capturing the different moods of what caught their eye and intellect in about 200 creative images. Take it as a highlight in Colombo's calendar of international events as it will be the 47h Annual International Exhibition of Photography of the Photographic Society of Sri Lanka. The oldest and the flag-bearing society here, which, in its thrust to promote and develop the art of photography since 1935, has produced some of the finest photographers in the country.

“Twilight”-Lin Dung-Leung, EFIPA, Hong Kong- Colour, Gold Medal

The exhibition always attracts a cross section of the cream of the elite photographic talent from Sri Lanka and all over the world, says the Society's President, Ravi Deraniyagala. Even to the casual visitor who may think that photography is just a direction in which to click the camera, the show is a place to grasp the different nuances, aspects and techniques of photography. The year's Gold Medal winners, "Twilight", a colour-shot by Lin Dung-Leung of Hong Kong, and "Frozen Lake" (Minnesota) in black and white by Sri Lankan Noel Alahakone are exemplary in this broader ambience.

The exhibition, will be inaugurated on November 22 at 6 p.m. The exhibits were judged for quality and the author's belief of the message communicated, by judges Dr. T.S.U. de Zilva, Dr. M.S. Weerakoon and H. Rajakaruna, bearers of international awards, books and publications of photography in their own right.
