J'pura violence : twenty four roped in

by ANTON NONIS

Twenty four suspects in last week's killing of Sri Jayawardanapura University undergraduate, Ovitigala Vithanage Samantha (23) at the university premises who are now in remand, will be produced at an identification parade at the Gangodawila Magistrate's Court on November 21. Investigations have revealed there are another seven still evading arrest.

The attack was staged by a set of extremist students of the university.

They set upon Samantha and other undergraduates who were against ragging of freshers.

On what was gathered from witnesses and the victims, the mob of around 75 students against a very small group numbering 10 to 15 were attacked with sticks and other blunt weapons.

Out of the students who sustained injuries, one is still under treatment at the Colombo National Hospital (CNH). Hospital Director at the CNH, Dr. Hector Weerasinghe told the `Sunday Observer' that the patient is still in the High Dependency Unit of the Neuro Surgical section and is making a slow progress.

Further investigations are on by a special team from the Mirihana police assisted by three teams from the Criminal Investigation Department instructed by Senior Superintendent Raja Weerakoon, and directed by the Western Province (South) Deputy Inspector General, Sirisena Herath.
