Muslims concerned over delays in burials

by Farah Macan Markar

Muslims in the country are faced with several problems regarding the burial of bodies, says Dr. M.M.M. Muzni, Chairman of the Sri Lanka Muslim Funeral (Janaza) Service Society (SLMFSS). According to Islam, the dead should be buried as soon as possible. However, at present many obstacles cause delays in doing this, of which, one is the issuing of death certificates. According to Dr. Muzni, the people in charge of these registering work do not work late at night and at the weekends. At sudden deaths, after admittance to hospital, the coroners don't work at these times. A police officer needed to inquire into the matter is also not present. All these problems cause delays in burials.

Dr. Muzni says that according to government rules, all of the above officers are supposed to work 24 hours. Up to this month 287 bodies have had to be given delayed burials because of this. The SLMFSS has spoken to the Inspector General of Police, the Justice Minister and even to the Security Registrar about the matter, but so far nothing has come out of it, Dr.Muzni said.
