Handwoven Interior - 2002 Exhibition The Handwoven Interior - 2002 Exhibition organized jointly by Textile Training & Services Centre and Sri Lanka Export Development Board, under the Ministry of Enterprise Development, Industrial Policy and Investment Promotion was held at National Art Gallery, recently. The exhibition presented fabrics designed by the National Handloom Centre Designers in response to Design Briefs given by three furniture manufactures, Arpico Furniture Limited, The Collage Gallery and The Hype. "Making a pragmatic departure from the usual 'modus operandi' which was to design according to up-market requirements in Sri Lanka as perceived by us and within design parameters as required for export to Europe, this year we have worked directly with specialist users of handwoven fabrics - Furniture Manufacturers. Sample swatches were produced at the NHC by professional weavers and presented to these three menufacturers/customers, a spokesman for the organizers said. Particular sample fabrics selected by each of them, presumably as having achieved the requirements of their design directions in terms of texture, colour, scale of patterns..., were given to producers participating in our project to be woven for exhibition and for selling at this Producers/Buyers presentation. The producers are the Departments of Textile Industries, of the Western Provincial Council, the Central Provincial Council, the Southern Provincial Council, the North Western Provincial Council, and Laksalu Handloom and Lanka Salu Sala (Pvt) Ltd., he added. The primary objective of this Centre is to upgrade the Handweaving Industry and guide it towards EXPORT. As an essential first step on this road is providing for upmarket requirements of the Home Country, all our annual projects have been geared to achieving this effectively from 1991 up to date, he said. |
