IUCN's Director General to visit Sri lanka

Mr. Achim Steiner, Director General of IUCN - The World Conservation Union is scheduled to visit Sri Lanka during the period 18-21st November 2002. He will be attending meetings of the IUCN Asia region, which will be held in Sri Lanka. He will also use the opportunity to meet IUCN's members and partners in the country.

Mr. Steiner - A German national - was born in Brazil where he lived for ten years. His educational background includes a BA at the University of Oxford (Philosophy, Politics and Economics) as well as MA at the University of London (Economics and Regional Planning). He also studied at the German Development Institute in Berlin (Development economics and Policy) as well as the Harvard Business School Achim Steiner is 41 years old.

Mr. Steiner has worked both at grassroots level and at the highest levels of international policy making to address the interface between environmental sustainability, social equity and economic development.

His long standing commitment to conservation and sustainable use of natural resources, as well as cross-cultural experience, put him in an ideal position to carry out the mission and mandate of IUCN.

IUCN - the World Conservation Union was founded in 1948 and brings together 79 states, 112 government agencies, 735 NGOs, 35 affiliates, and some 10,000 scientists and experts from 181 countries in a unique world-wide partnership.

Its mission is to influence, encourage and assist societies throughout the world to conserve the integrity and diversity of nature and to ensure that any use of natural resources is equitable and ecologically sustainable. Within the framework of global conventions IUCN has helped over 75 countries to prepare and implement national conservation and biodiversity strategies. IUCN has approximately 1,000 staff, most of whom are located in its 42 regional and country offices while 100 work at its Headquarters in Gland, Switzerland.
