Croatia President visits SL

President of Croatia Stjepan Mesic is now in Sri Lanka on an official visit to the country. The President of Republic of Croatia accompanied by Madam Milka Mesic arrived at BIA yesterday on a 3 day official visit to Sri Lanka.

There will be a civil reception to the visiting Head of State on Monday, November 18 at the Colombo Town Hall at 10.15 a.m. with the participation of Mayor of Colombo Prasanna Gunawardena along with Government Ministers, Western Province Governor, Chief Minister Western Province and Members of the Colombo Municipal Council.

One thousand jobs okayed in Italy

The Italian Ambassador for Sri Lanka Salvatore Zotta has informed in the Employment Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe that the Italian Government has ensured one thousand jobs for Sri Lankan nationals during the financial year ending December 31, 2002.

Twenty schols from Japan

Twenty educational scholarships have been awarded to children of postal workers by a group of postal workers of Japan. The awards ceremony was presided by Media Communication Minister Imitiaz Bakeer Markar held recently. The scholarships were awarded by the Senthi Chiba Uni Apro organisation which represents the Japanese Postal Department. The scholarships have been granted with the money subscribed by the Japanese postal staff from their monthly salaries. The scholarships were given to 10 schoolchildren and 10 university students. UK military expert here again

British military expert Gen. Sir Michael Rose is due to visit Sri Lanka again on November 26 on an invitation from Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, Defence sources said. He will visit high security zones this time where he will also meet top security force commanders in those areas.

Gen. Rose conducted a series of lectures for service officers on the peace process during his earlier visit. He was due to arrive in Sri Lanka last week. He will stay for a week this time. However, the media personnel were not allowed to meet him last time. (R.k)

Dengue warning

The officials of the Epidemiology Unit (EU) have warned the public to keep their environs clean to prevent an outbreak of the dengue fever once again.

According to them, several cases of dengue have been reported from the south and with the rain now been experienced and there is the likelyhood of the disease spreading to other parts of the island. Meanwhile, the CMC with the Dehiwala and Mount-Lavinia MC and Kotte UC will launch an integrated mosquito eradication campaign shortly. It is estimated to cost Rs. 50 million. (S.S)

A child needs help

Brian Stephen Bulner, aged 6 1/2 years of 41/2, De Soysa Road, Rawatawatte, Moratuwa has been investigated for 'short stature', by Dr. Shamya de Silva, Consultant Paediatrician of the Department of Paediatrics, Faculty of Medicine, Colombo, and found to be deficient in growth hormone. The hormone is essential for growth during childhood. At present he is 95 cm (3' 2") which is the average height of a three year old.

The cost of the hormone treatment needed for him initially would be approximately Rs. 12,000 per week. This has to be given for several years to achieve satisfactory results.

The parents are unable to raise the cost. They appeal to kind philanthropists, well-wishers and the general public to assist them.

Ramazan programme 2002

A Ramazan program had been organised by M. H. A. Haniffa, trustee of the Nawala Mosque.

Tharaveeya Prayers will be conducted daily commencing at 8.15 p.m. during Ramazan by Al-Hafiz M. Salman Faris. With prayers be conducted by Mowlavi Al Haj Hilurudeen (Falahi).

Hisbu recital of Quran will commence immediately after Withr Prayers approximately at 9.30 p.m. Refreshments will be provided.

On the significance of Ramazan, Bayan would be conducted on Saturdays and Sundays after Withr Prayers. Abdur Razic (M. H. L. Ari), Zulfikar Nazeem (Director Hayley's), P. C. Fakeer Jaufer (M. Phil).

Friday nights during Ramazan, Thaubah and Zikr Majlis will be conducted. Badr Mowlood will be recited after Asar Prayers on the 17th day of Ramazan Fast. On the same day Ashraal and Special Dua will be recited after Tharaveeya Prayers. Thasbeeh Prayers will be conducted at 10 p.m. on the 27th night and a Special Dua will be recited.

Kathamul Quran will be recited in the name of our Holy Prophet Muhammed (SAL) on the 29th Day (night).

Arrangements have been made for ladies to attend Tharaveeya Prayers, Withr and Thasbeeh Prayers and other Religious activities at the Mosque during Ramazan.
