Amrith and Mithun represent Sri Lanka at All-India Junior Golf

by LAL GUNESEKERA

Young, but quite experienced Amrith de Soysa, and the promising Mithun Nandasena Perera (the son of former top golfer K. A. Nandasena Perera), will represent Sri Lanka at the All-India Junior Golf Championship to be staged in Bangalore, India from November 19 to 23.

The Secretary of the Sri Lanka Golf Union (SLGU) Shiran de Soysa, told the Sunday Observer that both de Soysa and Mithun are already in Bangalore and will be joined by Binupa Wijesinghe (12 years) who is being sent as a private entry. De Soysa won the under-15 category at the All-India Junior Championship in Calcutta earlier this year where he also finished 8th in the under-18 category.

De Soysa also said that Anura Rohana who won the silver medal at the recent Asian Games in Busan, South Korea will be defending his title at the Bangladesh Open Amateur Championship in Dhaka from December 11 to 14. Rohana first won this title in 1999 and again earlier this year.

The SLGU has decided to send three amateurs to Dhaka and the national selectors (Major General C. Thurairaja, M. J. Mansoor, Lalin Samarawickreme and Mrs. Suwaneetha Selvaratnam) will be picking the other two soon.

The SLGU are also reviving the Sri Lanka Junior Open Championship after seven years. This is to be worked off on the Ridgeways of the Royal Colombo Golf Club (RCGC) from December 16 to 19 and is being sponsored by Milo. Earlier it was sponsored by Richard Pieris and Co. This is for boys and girls under-17 years.

R & A (Royal and Ancient), the controlling body for golf in the world, have agreed to send Henk Stevens again to Sri Lanka on a coaching assignment with both its juniors and seniors. He is expected to arrive in the country in February next year (2003), and he is keen to spend more than a month in the country.

The SLGU felicitated its golf team that brought honour to the country at the Asian Games in South Korea recently at a function at the RCGC on Friday evening attended by the Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Johnston Fernando, too. Anura Rohana who won a silver medal, was presented with a memento.

The other members of the Sri Lanka team were Lalith Kumara and Tissa Chandradasa. Sri Lanka are also scheduled to host the South Asian Association of Regional Co-operation (SAARC) Team and Individual Championship next year (2003) and the SLGU are looking into the financial aspects of staging such a tournament in the country where many players and officials from five other countries in the region (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and Bhutan) will compete.

The Chairman of the Sri Lanka Tourist Board Paddy Vitharne, too, has indicated his interest in Sri Lanka hosting this competition.
