Tough going for Slimline at Boxing Nationals

Last year's champions Slimline Sports Club will find it tough to repeat their success this year when the 77th National Boxing Championship will be staged from November 27 to 30 at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium.

Slimline who edged out Army by a single point (27 to 26) to win the E. S. Selladorai Memorial Challenge Cup at the 76th Championship held in January this year, will not have in their ranks star boxer Nilantha Walisundera who has turned professional in England while their coach Lal Amunugama has left Sri Lanka to train a club in England.

It was a fine passage of time for Slimline as they were picked as the most successful club of the year and awarded the Muttiah Xavier Roche Memorial Cup. Besides the Nationals, they also won the Clifford Cup Team Championship easily when the Army withdrew in 1991.

The Army too had a mishap earlier on when their coach Captain R. K. Indrasena was involved in an accident in August, but according to reports, he is recovering fast and Army will be in the fight along with Air Force and Police. The other clubs that will have boxers at the Nationals are: Nugegoda BC, Seevali BC, Arethusa BC, Kotte BC, Kalutara District BC, YMCA's Colombo and Kandy, Vidyartha BC and Pilimatalawa BC.

Besides the Selladorai Memorial Cup and the Muttiah Xavier Roche Memorial Challenge Cup, there will also be the Brigadier General Sir Henry William Manning Challenge Cup presented to the Most Scientific Boxer at the meet. Last year, K. A. C. N. Alexander of Seevali Ratnapura won this trophy.

The preliminary weigh-in preceded by the medical examination will be held between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. on Wednesday, 27th November at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium. The draw will follow the weigh-in. On the subsequent 3 days, the medical and weigh-in will be held between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. Entries close on 20th November with the Hony. Secretary, ABA Sri Lanka, Brigadier Jagath Jayasuriya at No. 53/2, Temple Road, Kalubowila, Dehiwela. A medical certificate obtained from a western qualified doctor should accompany the entry form.
