Seethadevi BV and Pushpadana joint champs by KANDY SPORTS CORRESPONDENT Seethadevi Balika Vidyalaya, Kandy and Pushpadana Girls College, Kandy, finished as joint champions of the Kandy Schools Girls under 19 hockey tournament when the finals ended in a scoreless in the tournament organised by the Kandy District Schools Hockey Association and played in Kandy. In the run-up to the semi finals in Group 'A' Seetha Devi BV beat Sri Rahula College 10 - 0 with skipper and centre forward Chathuranganie Ratnayake slamming 5 goals, Iroshani Liyanage (2), Amitha Ratnayake (1) and Imalka Samarasinghe (1). In the next match Seetha Devi stickers routed Swarnamai BV 9 - 0. Once again Chathuranganie Ratnayake was in blistering form scoring six goals including a hat-trick. The other goal scorers were Iroshani Liyanage (1), Amitha Ratnayake (1), Imalka Samarasinghe (1). Seethadevi BV were held to a one all draw by Pushpadana Girls College in a group match with Chathuranganie Ratnayake scoring for Seetha Devi and S. Wijesinghe for Pushpadana. Pushpadana Girls College also beat Swarnamali BV 4 - 0. S. Wijesinghe (3) and P. Sakalasooriya (1) doing the scoring. Next Pushpadana Girls College beat Sri Rahula College 2 - 0. N. Wijesooriya scored both goals. In the semi-finals, Seethadevi BV beat St. Anthony's Girls College 2 - 0. Iroshani Liyanage and Chathuranganie Ratnayake scored a goal each. In the other semi finals Pushpadana Girls College scored a narrow 1 - 0 win over Mahamaya Girls College with N. Wijesooriya scoring the winning goal. A notable feature of the tournament was that Seetha Devi BV skipper and centre forward Chathurangani Ratnayake scored 13 goals including two hat-tricks in five matches and the only match in which she could not sound the boards in the finals which ended in a scoreless draw. |
