Peradeniya University cricket champs

University of Peradeniya became champions at cricket after a long lapse when they beat University of Moratuwa by 57 runs in the finals of the inter-university cricket tournament. University of Peradeniya led by Nalaka Ratnayake won all four matches but they had a tough time in defeating University of Colombo by 26 runs in their second round match with opener S. Sanjaya making 104 with 14 fours out of a total of 189 which brought the Peradeniya undergrads the win.

In the final, Peradeniya University beat University of Moratuwa by 57 runs. Batting first Peradeniya undergrads made 198 for 9 in 40 overs and opener S. Sanjaya made 75 with 10 fours and the Moratuwa undergrads could muster only 141 all out with S. Suranga making 73 with 11 fours.

University of Peradeniya: 198 for 9 wickets in 40 overs (S. Sanjaya 75, Chamara Seneviratne 24, P. Dharmasena 21, A. Madurugoda 22, I. Gammanpila 26, K. Kanchana 2 for 11, R. Rasika 2 for 29). University of Moratuwa: 141 all out in 36 overs (S. Suranga 73, S. Ramesh 17, S. Chandraratne 3 for 14, I. Gammanpila 3 for 11).

In the fist round University of Peradeniya beat Rajarata University by nine wickets. Rajarata University: 51 all out in 21 overs (S. Jagath 21, S. Chandraratne 4 for 12, I Gammanpila 3 for 23). University of Peradeniya: 52 for 1 in 10 overs (N. Ratnayake 10, S. Sanjaya 15 not out, U. Bandara 11 not out).

University of Peradeniya beat University of Colombo in the second round by 26 runs. University of Peradeniya: 189 all out in 40 overs (S. Sanjaya 104, C. Seneviratne 24, H. Boteju 3 for 19, S. Maduwantha 3 for 28, N. Jajeev 2 for 40). University of Colombo: 163 all out in 38.2 overs (L. Lahiru 41, S. Kumara 24, I. Gammanpila 3 for 26, S. Chandraratne 2 for 22).

Semi-finals

University of Peradeniya beat University of Ruhunu by 8 wickets.

University of Ruhunu: 156 all out in 40 overs (S. Rajitha 37, K. Karitha 38, M. Amila 43, S. Chandrasena 3 for 24, I. Gammanpila 2 for 25, P. Dharmasena 3 for 29).

University of Peradeniya: 160 for 2 wickets in 28 overs (Nalaka Ratnayake 49, Upul Bandara 60 not out, Nalin Karunaratne 43 not out).
