'Orientation Centre' at BIA by Ananda Kannangara The Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) will set up an "Orientation Centre" for the benefit of Sri Lankan housemaids, who seek employment abroad. The Centre which will be set up in close proximity to the Bandaranaike International Airport, Katunayake next month, will offer all housemaids, a three-day special training on how to handle sophisticated home appliances and kitchen utensils. The objective of conducting such a training program is to eliminate various hardships, faced by Lankan female workers due to lack of knowledge in modern appliances. There were instances that the service period of many Lankan housemaids were terminated by employers on the ground that they were not fit enough to be employed in houses, especially in countries such as Cyprus, Singapore, Seychelles, Malaysia and several other western countries. The Chairman of the SLBFE Karunasena Hettiaratchchi is concerned and emphasised that the proposed Centre would help to minimise problems faced by our housemaids to a greater extent. The Bureau says that any woman worker who plans to leave the country to work as a housemaid could apply to the Bureau Headquarters at Isipathana Mawatha, Colombo 5 to undergo training and confirmed that no additional fee will be charged. |
