EDB targets Rs 600 b. growth

by Hiran H.Senewiratne

Sri Lanka Export Development Board (EDB) has set a target to achieve an export growth of Rs 600 billion in the year 2005-2006, in the country.

In 2004, the country's exports have achieved an encouraging 11.7 per cent growth to Rs 472 billion in the first ten months, EDB Chairman Rohantha Athukorala said.

"The challenge for Sri Lanka is to become global marketers and exporters, which certain companies demonstrated by creating global brands," Athukorala said.

Athukorala emphasised the importance of researching overseas markets to see whether current products fit into the requirements of those consumers. The country needs to customize its products to build global brands.

"We have many a success story in the country that demonstrates that we have skills to identify requirement better than our global competitors like Dilmaha," he added.

Most of the global brands have identified the requirement of customising products by practising the concept of segmentation and targeting of markets, he added.

In the meantime, EDB will establish three regional centres in Jaffna,Trincomalee and Ampara districts, which will be linked up with the main EDB office in Colombo. At present Galle and Kurunagala regional branches are functioning well.

These regional officers will gather information on various SME sectors in the area and will feed to the its web site.EDB also will encourage people who are involved in the SME sector to get themselves registered with the EDB.

This will enable them to project their products globally, with the assistance of the EDB, EDB Chairman Athukorala said.

Currently, Galle regional office is assessing the damage cause to the SME sector due to the tsunami disaster, in affected areas. There after strategies will be developed to assist those exporters to stand on their feet ,he concluded.
