Navy to build 1000 fishing vessels by Athula K.Samarakoon Sri Lanka Navy has launched an expedited program to manufacture and donate 1000 fishing boats to tsunami-hit fishermen under the directive of President Chandrika Kumaratunga.
The Presidential Secretariat has released necessary funds and the Inshore Patrol Craft Construction Project (IPCCP) at the Gemunu Naval Ship Base, Welisara has already initiated the manufacturing process. Lieutenant Commander Samantha Samaranayake said that it was the first time that they were manufacturing fishing boats and they had the latest technology for the project. The IPCCP was the major supplier of fighting craft for the SL Navy from year 2000. The project is examined by Naval Engineering Director Admiral G.C.I.Kariyawasam and other officials. according to Shipwright Lieutenant Suminda Salgado preparation of moulds for fishing boats would be finalised within two weeks. Lieutenant Commander Samaranayaka commented that they would be able to manufacture 140 to 150 boats per month and only 650 boats would be manufactured in the first phase of the project. |
