EU wants no politics

The European Union Heads of Missions in Sri Lanka have urged the government, all political parties and the LTTE to actively promote a fair distribution of relief assistance to the victims of the Tsunami disaster, irrespective of their political affiliations, religious and ethnic background.

The Royal Netherlands Embassy, in its capacity as local representative of the EU presidency, issued a declaration stating, that it was essential that there should be no politicalisation of relief efforts.

The declaration has also urged all stake holders to seize the opportunity for peace building and reconciliation, and all parties to co-operate to sustain the support and goodwill demonstrated by Sri Lankans and the international community.

It has called upon all parties to refrain from any action during the distribution of humanitarian aid that might have a potential negative impact on the peace process. The declaration expressed its belief that effective and appropriate decentralisation was necessary for the successful relief and reconstruction operation.

Stressing that the Heads of Missions would impress upon their partner organisations to ensure that relief and reconstruction aid was allocated to all victims of the Tsunami, independent of their political, ethnic or religious backround, the declaration has called for the establishment of an independent and multi-stakeholder monitoring mechanism to review proceedings and would further support the UN system in co-ordination and monitoring.
