Several underworld figures nabbed by Jayampathy Jayasinghe Police have intensified their anti-crime operation during the past few months and several underworld characters like contract killers operating in Colombo and in the suburbs have been arrested. Meanwhile the Colombo Crime Division (CCD) has detailed several teams to arrest two more underworld characters who escaped from a safe house at Modera in which they were hiding along with other gang members when the police swooped down last Friday. Two notorious underworld characters known as Priyantha Kulasekera alias Sella-Kaluwa and W. Gamage Ruwan Pushpakumara alias Thiyagoda Ruwan, died when they were fired upon by their own underworld members hiding in an isolated house at Rajasinghe Mawatha, Modera. In fact, Sella-Kaluwa and Thiyagoda Ruwan had led the police party to the safe house last Friday. It all happened when the CCD officers raided a farm house at Kiriwanthudawa in Kahathuduwa area last week in search of notorious underworld prisoners who escaped from the Matara Prison during the tsunami which destroyed the Matara prison complex. The gang members had re-grouped and were staying at a farm house that belonged to a businessman at Borella. The gang members were leaving in a Nissan March car when the police vehicle blocked their car near the entrance to the farm. Four gang members managed to escape while Sella Kaluwa and Thiyagoda Ruwan were caught by the police with a loaded T-56 automatic weapon and 28 rounds of 7.62 ammunition in their possession. Later CCD officers grilled both suspects and learnt that their colleagues were staying at an isolated house at Modera. Last Friday a police party accompanied Sella Kaluwa and Thiyagoda Ruwan to the hideout at Modera in the wee hours of the morning. The gang members on seeing the police party had then fired at Sella Kaluwa and Ruwan wounding them badly. During the shoot out with the police, Nilantha Sanjeewa another underworld figure was shot dead. However Rala and Kota Gamini, two others escaped during the shoot out. According to police, Rala, a notorious illicit hooch dealer in Modera had been occupying the safe house at Rajasinghe Mawatha, Modera for some time. The wounded underworld figures Sella Kaluwa and Thiyagoda Ruwan later succumbed to their injuries at the National Hospital Colombo.Director CCD, Senior Supdt. of Police, Sarath Lugoda is directing investigations under the Directions of DIG, Colombo Sirisena Herath. |
