Telecom waiver for tsunami victims

by Anton Nonis

Posts and Telecommunications Minister, D. M. Jayaratne has given instructions to the Telecommunication Department to squash all telephone bills of the tidal wave victims upto December 26, 2004. It has been revealed that over 80,000 telephone subscribers stand to benefit by the minister's directive.

It also applies even to those who had defaulted in settling their bills within the stipulated three-month period, after which telecommunication facilities for them were disconnected.

Jayaratne has also suggested to create about 40 sub-post offices with satellite telephone connections in the vicinity of camps of the displaced in the affected areas.

The Chinese Telecommunications Minister has agreed to donate 300,000 telephones to Sri Lanka. Minister Jayaratne said these telephones would be distributed free to the victims who lost their telephones during the tidal wave disaster.
