UDA and UNICEF to co-ordinate

The Urban Development Authority and the UNICEF will direct and coordinate a joint venture for the provision of drinking water and healthy sanitary conditions in the Northern and Eastern provinces, including other Tsunami affected areas, a Senior Official of the Urban Development and Water Supply Ministry said.

The Senior Official told the 'Sunday Observer' that these decisions had been taken at the inaugural meeting which discussed on the reconstruction and rehabilitation of the Tsunami disaster victims and the provision of adequate sanitary conditions, drinking water and alternate living environments. The meeting held at the ministry auditorium on Wednesday, has chaired by Urban Development and Water Supply Minister Dinesh Gunawardena.

The Ministry Secretary Thosapala Hewage and his staff, World Bank, IMF, WHO, International Red Cross, JAICA and other NGO representatives, had participated at the discussions and taken the onus for the same.

They had also agreed to expedite the construction process by handling separate areas on an individual basis, among themselves, the Official further said. (RM)
