Attempt to dupe Mahapola fails

After all it is the human greed that drives people to take risks and do crazy things like tampering of a lottery sweep ticket to claim the first prize. We often hear stories where people who attempt to cheat often end up at a police station.

But fate of the man who altered the winning numbers first prize Mahapola lottery wasn't that bad, thanks to Mahapola lottery officials who accepted his plausible explanation and allowed him to go scot free.

A Mahapola Lottery official told the 'Sunday Observer' that a man from Morawake who called at their office with the first prize Mahapola winning ticket claimed the first prize of Rs. 700,000.

However Mahapola officials were sceptical and found out later that the ticket had been tampered with. The man when called upon to explain had told them that he had pasted two torn tickets which he had in his possession wrongly. His intention was not to defraud the Mahapola lottery, he said.

Officials said the detection was made possible due to modern technology and fool proof security system at the Mahapola Centre.

The Mahapola fund generates 9200 new scholarships every year, with 36,000 directly supported by the fund at any given time.

The program enables many Sri Lankan youths to complete a sound education. (J.J.)
