Life returns to roads by Rohan Mathes The Highways Ministry and Road Development Authority (RDA) has expeditiously restored the Tsunami affected Colombo-Galle-Hambantota-Wellawaya A1 road, and made it motorable for normal traffic within a week. The East coast roads too are expected to be motorable within the next two weeks. RDA Chairman M.B.S. Fernando in an exclusive interview to the Sunday Observer said that this was achievable solely due to the commitment and dedication of his staff, especially the engineers, the State Development and Construction Corporation (SD and CC), 'Maga Neguma' staff, the Armed Forces, Police and Irrigation Department among others. The Japanese Construction Company working on the Southern Highway Kumagai Gumi, the South Korean Keangnam Company, local Construction Contractors such as K.D.A. Weerasinghe and Company and International Construction Corporation (ICC) made their contribution as well. They had worked round the clock, in two shifts. "Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse who is also the Highways Minister wanted development reports daily for monitoring purposes, to ensure the project was completed within a week", the Chairman said. Traffic had not been disrupted considerably due to damage caused to the Weligama bridge, because of the bypass old road. In the Colombo-Ratnapura-Wellawaya-Batticaloa highway, the Eastern coastal belt part had been affected by the tidal wave. The 334 M Komari bridge had been completely washed away but made motorable. The 362 to 395 road had been washed away in 10 places, now repaired and motorable. |
