Canadian PM Paul Martin will arrive in Colombo today. He will call on President Kumaratunga, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse, humanitarian agencies and parliamentarians.

Hansard Editor, family victims of tsunami

Morano Amit, Editor Hansard, his wife Kanthi, Chief Parliamentary Interpreter and their daughters Shenya and Tanya became victims of tsunami in Ambalangoda on their way to Kataragama on December 26.

Morano's Janaza took place at the Jawatte Muslim Burial Grounds on Jan. 8. Kanthi, Shenya and Tanya are still missing.

FAO to uplift fisheries

The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) has pledged to support Sri Lanka to draw long-term plans to restore the fisheries industry, which is paralysed after tsunami disaster.

The FAO Director General Dr. Jacques Diouf who visited Sri Lanka last Friday told the media that Sri Lanka requested US $ 9 million soon after the disaster but the FAO has granted US $ 15 million to provide immediate assistance to tsunami victims - fishermen and farmers.

Referring to the rumour that fish after tsunami is not safe for consumption, Dr. Diouf said that it was a myth and no fish feed on human corpses. "This misconception has to be cleared soon because this has already hit the daily income of fisher folks", he added.

Norwegian heavyweights here on Thursday

Norwegian Foreign Minister Jan Petersen and International Development Minister Hilde F. Johnson will visit Sri Lanka 20 - 23 January to assess the damage and the needs of the people after the tsunami disaster.

The two ministers plan to visit Hambantoa and Mullaitivu to study the ground situation and to gain a first hand impression of how the relief work is proceeding for the people struck by the greatest natural disaster in the history of Sri Lanka.

The Norwegian government has granted 183 million USD to the region and has named Sri Lanka a major recipient. Deputy Foreign Minister Vidar Helgesen and Special Adviser Erik Solheim will also take part in the visit.

Children missing

Hamsa Buhari (10 years), Hanan Buhari (3 years), Hanas Buhari (01 year) these 3 children are reported missing since December 26 the day the tsunami hit the Hambantota area. Any information could be given to Roy Buhari (father of the children) on 071-4098532 or 0112814882.

Missing baby

One and a half old child went missing while he was at Ranliya Hotel, Hambanthota, caught by the tidal waves.
