Thuhashini Selvaratnam course record in trials

by LAL GUNASEKERA

A former Sri Lanka amateur champion, Thuhashini Selvaratnam, established a new course record with a gross 67 on the Ridgeways of the Royal Colombo Golf Club (RCGC) during the trials held to pick the country's contingent for the Queen Sirikit Ladies Team Championship scheduled to be staged in Thailand in May.

Thuhashini, who now resides in Arizona, USA, is Sri Lanka's best amateur women's golfer, and was in the country on a vacation and has made herself available to play for the country if selected in the Queen Sirikit Cup Championship. She went back to USA yesterday.

She has won the Arizona State Amateur Championship for a number of years, and even held the earlier course record with a gross 69 before the Ridgeways was redeveloped. She carded 72 on the second day of the trials.

The other two golfers who impressed at the two-day trial last week were Jackie Dias (71, 78) and 17-year-old Kishani Vethavinayagam (83, 84).

Sri Lanka who are eyeing the third or fourth position in Thailand, will be competing with the best amateurs from 13 other countries, including Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, South Korea, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong, India and the Philippines.

Sri Lanka's best performance was in the inaugural year at Thailand in 1979 represented by Tiru Fernando, Suwaneetha Selvaratnam and Yvonne Abhayaratne. They finished in third place.

Then in 1980 in Indonesia, Sri Lanka were placed fourth and were once again represented by the same players. Sri Lanka were to host the Queen Sirikit Cup Championship last year, but were unable to do so due to unavoidable circumstances, but are making every attempt to do so next year (2006). It was held in Nuwara-Eliya in 1982.
