Madras-Colombo and ARAE regattas - only foreign assignments

by LESLIE FERNANDO

Sri Lanka will be involved in two foreign rowing championships _ the annual Madras-Colombo Regatta in June and Amateur Rowing Association of East Regatta (ARAE) in December this year.

Deva Henry, the President of Amateur Rowing Association of Sri Lanka (ARASL) said that Sri Lanka will concentrate on domestic events. The national rowing 'pool' has been disbanded as the South Asian Games (SAG) is postponed due to tsunami disaster. New 'pool' of rowers will be picked only after the National Rowing Championships and the prestigious Royal-Thomian Regatta, added ARASL chief.

Rowers will participate in only two foreign meets but schools squads, namely S. Thomas' College, Royal College and St. Joseph's College and the Universities are expected to row in dual meets abroad.

The opening regatta for the year 2005 will take place on February 18 and 19 on Beira Waters, Colombo Rowing Club. The events to be worked off are pairs for Vanlangenburg Trophy, sculls for Golden Armstrong Trophy, fours for HMS Enterprise Trophy, Ladies pairs for novices and junior.

The remaining regatta calendar is as follows-March 19: Intermediate Regatta Championships for Wardrop Trophy, Centenary Oars Trophy and RCYC Trophy.

April 9: Ranfer Sprints, May 13-14: South Monsoon Regatta Championships for HMS Enterprise Trophy and Stubbs Quaich Trophy, May 28: St. Joseph's College Sculling Regatta, June 10-11: Madras-Colombo Regatta, July 29-30: Moratuwa University and Colombo University Regatta. August 14-20: National Rowing Championships - September 16-17: Ladies College and Musaeus College Regatta, October 14-15: North East Monsoon Regatta for V. A. Julius Trophy, Herman Sirimanne Trophy, Presidents Trophy, Ladies Plate: October 22: Royal-Thomian Regatta: November 18-19: Yearend Regatta for Harry Creasy Trophy, Colvin Sirimanne Trophy, Cyraine Cup and Veteran Trophy: December 16-17: Amateur Rowing Association of East Regatta.
