Tennis for all ages at Amalanathan school

A top-notch tennis coach from Tamilnadu State, India, Arul Amalanathan, has opened his own tennis school near S. Thomas' College, Mount Lavinia and also at the CR & FC at Longden Place.

Speaking to the Sunday Observer, Amalanathan, said that he first arrived in the island in April 2001 and was attached to the Sri Lanka Tennis Association (SLTA) and was in charge of its entire tennis coaching programme for about 2 1/2 years.

It was when his association with the SLTA "broke up", Amalanathan, decided to open his own tennis school in October 2003. He had about 200 kids under his wing, before the North-East Monsoon set in. There were also the "drop outs", but he expects about 180 students, now that the weather has cleared up.

He said: There are kids from five years to 18 attending my school of tennis. I also give lessons to adults, as well as beginners and intermediates. There is also a "performance group" which play every day and there is a special fitness coach for them.

Amalanathan, who has been a coach for the past 15 years, started his coaching career in 1989 with the Triangular Tennis Trust (TTT) in Chennai, before being a talent scout cum coach for the Tamilnadu Academy for Tennis Excellence (TATE), which had a special programme with eight top juniors in the state, where they played in various tournaments in India and overseas, which were completely funded by the Tamilnadu Tennis Association (TTA). He was also the head coach for couple of other academy's in Tamilnadu.

He married Nilmini, a Sri Lankan lass, in June last year (2004) and the couple live in Dehiwala.
