Senior Asian Netball Championships put off to Sept. 2 to 11 The 6th Senior Asian Netball championships will be held from September 2 to 11 in Singapore. The Asian Netball Federation at a special meeting held on January 12 decided to stage the postponed tourney on the new dates. Sri Lanka are the holders of the title. In the 5th Championships held in July 2002 at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium, Sri Lanka beat Singapore by 56 goals to 55 to retain the title. The sixth edition was to be held in Singapore from February 17 to 25, but the Asian Netball Federation took a unanimous decision to postpone it, considering the request made by the Netball Federation of Sri Lanka and Maldives Netball Federation as both countries were affected by the tsunami disaster, said Ms. Yasmin Dharmaratne, Secretary, Netball Federation of Sri Lanka. Ms. Dharmaratne added that eight countries_Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan, Maldives, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Hong Kong have entered the championships. According to Tamara Dharmakeerthi Herath, the Asian Region Director of the International Netball Federation, the 6th Senior Asian Netball Championships is postponed and even the International Netball Federation, the organisers together with Commonwealth Games Sports Council have taken a stand to postpone the date of naming the Asian team to represent at the Commonwealth Games Netball Championships, till September 30. The Commonwealth Games 2006 will be held in Australia. (L.F) |
