Veteran soccer ref. Alfred 'calls it a day' by S. M. JIFFREY ABDEEN - Kandy Sports Corr. Soccer referee B. D. Alfred has decided to 'call it a day' with the whistle after serving the game in Kandy for 39 years. His absence on the soccer field is found to be felt. A jovial figure on and off the field, Alfred now pushing 74 is an epitome of fitness and has hardley ever known any sickness. He says good habits and a free and easy mind helped him to keep fit. B. D. Alfred, a product of the Little known Punniyasampada School in Kandy which hardley has any sporting activity, looks after the educational interest of the down trodden folk. He came into the soccer scene as a centre half, playing for Kandy Municipal Council which he has represented for over 25 years and also has represented the Kandy District team. He has also represented Madhyamalanka Sports Club in the premier soccer tournaments. D. B. Alfred played the game for nearly 30 years at various levels and though he is getting on in years, he says he could still fit into a veterans team if called upon to do so. He took to refereeing during his playing days and he 'blew' at top level games till a couple of years ago. Thereafter he officiated in less important games and has now decided to 'give up' officiating, making room for the youngsters. |
