More donors to Asia tsunami relief effort PARIS, Jan 15 (AFP) Public and private aid pledged to countries hit by the Asian tsunami catastrophe has risen to some 10.8 billion dollars, according to an AFP tally. The following is a non-exhaustive list of the aid offered by governments, international bodies and leading charities around the world. It includes contributions made by 56 states, two multilateral organizations (the European Commission and the Organization of the Islamic Conference), and four international financial institutions. The public aid, which amounts to about 8.6 billion dollars, includes pledges made by governments and various international institutions. It includes cash donations, the cost of humanitarian operations run by several states in the tsunami-hit zone, government contributions to UN agencies or non-governmental organizations, as well as reconstruction and medical aid. It also includes low-interest loans and debt relief. |
