Police shoot dead suspected criminal by Jayampathy Jayasinhe An Army deserter and a suspected criminal wanted in connection with several bank robberies and for the murder of a businessman in Kadawata was shot dead by police last morning at Ragama when he grappled with the police driver to free himself, Police said. A police team led by Inspector Devasurendra from Ragama police had arrested the deserter, Madura Fernando while at Ratgama and was being escorted in a police vehicle to Ragama when the suspect attempted to over power the police driver with the handcuffs that he wore. However a policeman seated along with him on the back seat of the vehicle shot him fearing his escape. The deserter is wanted for the robbery of Rs. 1.8 million from a petrol shed at Minuwangoda and for the robbery of a bank at Mahabage. He is also wanted for the murder of a well known businessman in Kadawata area. ASP Crimes Kelaniya, Priyantha Jayakody said that the suspect had terrorised several businessmen at Ragama and Kadawata areas by extorting large sums of money as ransom. Several businessmen from Ragama and Kadawata had fled from their areas fearing the bandit, sources said. DIG North-Western Province, Kobalawithane and SSP Kelaniya Jagath Abeysiriwardena are directing investigations. |
