Grants to rebuild tsunami damaged houses by Anura Maitipe Submission of building plans and land titles was not needed to obtain compensation for houses damaged by tsunami disaster, a spokesman for the Central Bank told the Sunday Observer. He said " This is not a bank loan. It's an outright grant which would not be recovered later. The Central Bank has already issued instructions to the banks to pay compensation for affected houses on the recommendations made by Gramasevaka and Divisional Secretary in the area". With the submission of the recommendation made by the Grama Niladhari and the Divisional Secretary, to the bank, officials of the bank along with the officers of Divisional Secretariat would visit the site, he added. They would assess the damage caused to the building during their field visit. The relevant amount of compensation would be paid to the owner of property through the bank by cheque, he said. However in the event of the breadwinner's death the wife could claim compensation for the damaged property. If both are dead compensation would be paid to the children, he added Funds have been released by the Treasury to authorised banks in the affected areas to pay compensation for all damaged houses in the tsunami affected areas, he said. |
