Japanese NGOs to help tsunami affected North-East

Two Japanese non-governmental organisations on the request of Japanese Embassy in Sri Lanka has come forward to implement two projects in tsunami affected North-East coastal areas. The projects on 'Emergency Rehabilitation Project for Tsunami Affected Fishing Villages' will be implemented by Bridge Asia Japan (BAJ) and the Pacific Asia Resource Centre (PARC) under the directive of Government of Japan.

At the agreement signing function which was held at the Embassy premises last week, Japanese Ambassador Akio Suda said that Government of Japan had planned to provide a sum of US$ 291,508 (approximately Rs. 29,000,000). He said that two NGOs BAJ and PARC would engage in reconstruction and rehabilitation works of tsunami affected Jaffna and Mullaitivu districts from next week onwards.

He further said that tsunami related damages to the fisheries sector was immense which affected the livelihood of a vast number of people living along the coastal areas and government of Japan would directly assist the Sri Lankan Government at the vital process of restoration of livelihood of the affected people.

BAJ representative Yasufumi Tsukemura at the agreement signing function said that they would concentrate works relating to repairs over 150 fishing boat engines and focus on transfer of technology where a large number of fishermen in Mullaitivu training in boat repairs. The project would also guide the fishermen in establishing an appropriate maintenance system equipped with tool kits and many other things.

Meanwhile, PARC Representative and its Project Manager Ayako Pmanavi said that they would be providing fishing craft and gear to a fisheries co-operative society on Vadamarachchi for rental for over 350 needy fishermen safeguarding their livelihoods. She also assured that they would have a close relationship with the Ministry of Fisheries in implementing the projects.

Relief, Rehabilitation and Reconciliation Ministry Secretary M.S. Jayasinghe, the ministry senior advisor Dr. A.S. Kunasingham, Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Ministry Director General A. Hettiarachchi and Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Department Director General G. Piyasena also graced the event.
