Project Phoenix in its second phase A group of volunteers including University Professors and professionals have launched the second stage of its tsunami relief program - Project Phoenix (PP) to build houses for the affected families, PP Head Prof. P. P. G. L. Siriwardene said. The recipients would be selected from the lists provided by the Divisional Secretaries of the respective areas on a point system based on a questionnaire given by the PP. The PP jointly with the National Engineering Research and Development Centre of Sri Lanka (NERD) would begin the construction work within the next few weeks, Prof. Siriwardene said. NERD Engineer Lionel Liyanage and Neville Fernando both members of the PP will organise the construction. Sri Lankan expatriates and others from USA, UK, Australia, Canada, Belgium, Malaysia and local organisations and individuals have funded this project, Prof. Siriwardene said. The Board of Directors are Professor P.P.G.L. Siriwardene (President) K. Jivinda de Silva (Vice President), Prof. Upali Jayasekera (Secretary) Prof. M.W. Ranjith N. de Silva (Treasurer). Urban Development Authority Coordinator Deepthi de Mel met Minister Dinesh Gunawardena and UDA Director General Prasanne Silva and has obtained approval for the project. The construction of the houses is scheduled to begin within the next few weeks, Senior Consulting civil engineer Lionel U. Liyanage, said. |
