NHDA to provide temporary housing for the displaced

The National Housing Development Authority (NHDA) has decided to extend its re-housing program to other tsunami affected areas thereby building more temporary houses for the displaced, Deputy Minister of Housing and Construction Chandrasiri Gajadeera told a press briefing in Matara recently.

The NHDA has built 400 temporary houses in Dikwella, Devinuwara, Matara and Weligama Divisional Secretariat areas to accommodate displaced families from eight camps. These houses are on a semi permanent basis, which comprises of cemented floors, side walls thatched roofing, electricity, running water and common toilets have been built to last over a year with the financial assistance from Seva Lanka Foundation.

The program will be introduced to other areas until the Government provide permanent housing for the affected under its reconstruction project.
