Village consisting of 74 houses to be set up in Wenamulla The United Sri Lanka Association (USLA), a community based organisation in New Zealand, along with the support of the Sri Lankan community and New Zealanders have contributed financial assistance to Sri Lanka through local organisations such as the Sarvodaya and UNICEF - Sri Lanka, since the outset of the disaster of December 26. A massive contribution of funds totalling up to NZ $ 250,000 has been donated for relief items and for the present post tsunami phase of rehabilitation and reconstruction work, according to USLA Vice President, Channa Ranasinghe. "An additional NZ$ 250,000 was donated by the New Zealand Government to match what we have collected", he added. He also said that out of the generated funds, "about 80% was channelled to Sarvodaya and the remaining 20% to UNICEF". The USLA has proposed a project to implement an entire village consisting of about 74 houses in Wenamulla, Ambalangoda in the Galle District for the displaced in the area. Sarvodaya has already initiated work on this project by utilising the balance of the initial contribution of about Rs. 20m for this project, which is about Rs. 8m. "We selected this village close to Colombo so our children from New Zealand, who visit Sri Lanka can go and see this and organise further projects in support", he emphasised. |
