No more water cuts until May by Don Asoka Wijewardena Although the 5-hour water cut in Wellawattha,Dehiwela and Bambalapitiya area continues no immediate water cuts will be imposed until middle of May. The water cuts imposed in some areas of the Colombo city were due to low pressure in the plants as a result of high consumption, said National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWSDB) General Manager, M. Wickremage. He emphasised that the NWSDB had been cautioning the general public to use water sparingly for domestic purposes as the prevailing drought would seem to be continuing till end of May and added that the NWSDB would urge people to use water carefully, especially when washing cars, watering gardens, etc. When asked about any positive response shown by people to the NWSDB request,General Manager Wickremage said that despite the NWSDB appeal, most people had been indifferent to our precautionary measures that could be taken to prevent possible water shortages. The 20-hour water cut imposed by the NWSDB yesterday in the Colombo city, towns in Colombo North, Colombo South and Colombo East was due to electricity cuts in the Ambatale area. NWSDB sources said that due to electricity interruptions in Ambatale area the NWSDB was unable to supply water and had repaired a number of pipes of leakages. |
