Program to boost traditional industries

by Chanuka Mannapperuma

The Government has launched a comprehensive program to give a new lease of life to the country's traditional industries which were once a lucrative livelihood contributing immensely to the rural economy.

Under this program, identified traditional industries which are still under developed, will be provided necessary assistance to cope up with emerging challenges in the market.

The Small and Rural Industries Ministry which handles this program aims to introduce new technology to those selected industries to make them vibrant and economically strong.

Under this program the Ministry has already introduced new technology to the Foundry Industry. Badanagala village which is famous for foundry products has been identified to be upgraded under this new program. Located in the North Central Province, nearly 225 families in the Badanagala village are engaged in this field. "Villagers are still using traditional methods such as fire, ordinary equipment and bellows. It is a time consuming process to make products by using these age old equipment and mechanism" added K.D Lalkantha, Minister of Small and Rural Industries.

Under this initiative, new technology is being provided by the Industrial Development Board while the National Design Centre provides modern designs. He said the Ministry has allocated Rs. 1,440,547 for this program.
