'Private Devi V' launched by Ananda Kannangara A former cadet officer in the Sri Lanka Army Major Ramani Kangaraarachchi will release her latest book "Private Devi V" at a ceremony scheduled to be held at Mahanama Vidyalaya Auditorium, Colombo on April 2 at 3.00 pm. Major Kangaraarachchi, in a press briefing said that the objective of writing such a book was to create public awareness of the life story of a young female soldier. "At a time when only a few in our society talk about our female soldiers, I was encouraged to write such a book, mentioning some of the most important performances of female soldiers", she said. She also said the book gives a wide description about the obstacles and challenges faced by the female soldier during her military tenure. Major Kangaraarachchi is the Founder President of the Sri Lanka Army Women's Corps Association (SLAWCA), which was formed in 1979. After her retirement from the Sri Lanka Army in 1995 as the Second-in-Command in her regiment, she focused her attention towards the field of journalism and has so far written three books, relating her own experiences in the battle field. President, Sri Lanka Army Ex-Service Women's Corps Association, Capt. Victoria Lakshmi said that fifty percent of the proceeds from the book will be utilised for welfare activities of tsunami affected families of women army soldiers, granting scholarships for the children of the Association members etc. |
