New blood bank to increase collection by 200 per cent A National Blood Transfusion Centre (NBTC) will be set up at a cost of over Rs 1500 million at Elvitigala Mawatha, Colombo 5. The NBTC is the main component of the Government's "Project for the Improvement of the National Blood Transfusion Services" which is financed by the Japanese Government under its ODA loans through the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC). According to the Health Ministry sources the project would ensure an efficient safety blood supply, establishing a trustworthy blood transfusion network in the country. NBTC is also expected to increase after the project completion the capacity of blood collection by 200 per cent. The centre would also look into setting up provincial and regional blood banks training the related personnel. It would also provide consulting services for supervising the project and at the same time enhance the management of blood transfusion with the assistance of World Health Organisation (WHO) to keep international standards. The foundation stone laying ceremony for the construction took place last week with the participation of Healthcare, Nutrition and Uva Wellassa Development Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva and Japanese Ambassador Akio Suda. The completion of the construction has been arranged within a year and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has also agreed to provide training facilities for 44 relevant officials under its technical cooperation program.
