US $ 23m from India

The Indian government has pledged an outright grant of US$ 23 million for project related tsunami work, the Indian High Commission in Sri Lanka said.

The First Secretary Sanjay Sudhir told the Sunday Observer that specific areas such as fisheries, health sector and the uplift of Small and Medium-scale Enterprises (SMEs) have been identified by the Sri Lankan government as those qualifying to receive the said grant. "This aid will be directly forwarded to the government of Sri Lanka, and we are working along with the government in the identified projects.

Women take over Europe

In a rare feat of gender empowerment on the eve of the International Women's Day five women have been appointed as heads of Sri Lankan diplomatic missions in five important European capitals. The appointed are: Kaniska Seneviratne - High Commissioner in London. Wagishware Chitranganie - Ambassador in Paris, Anu Wijewardene - Ambassador in Vienna. Sarala Fernando - Ambassador in Geneva and Pamela Deen - Ambassador in Amsterdam.
