Normalcy returns to Jaffna

by Rashomi Silva

The situation in Jaffna has returned to normal after civil agitation that followed the death of school girl Nagendran Kulasingam (13), who was knocked down by a military vehicle, the Army said yesterday.

The Army and the LTTE met Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) on Saturday morning to discuss the girl's death and the incident that followed her death.

Jaffna Security Forces Commander Maj. Gen. Sunil Tennekoon who led the security forces team at talks said the parties discussed arrangements to prevent such unfortunate incidents in the future.

Meanwhile LTTE sources denying its involvement in the civil agitations, said the protestors were angry at the Police and the security forces for opening fire at civilians protesting the death of a school girl.

The Army media unit said the security forces and the Police had to open fire, when a group of men started setting fire on military points and SLFP party office in the Jaffna town. The rioters blocked all roads leading to Jaffna town by obstructing the opening of the roads with burning tyres and logs and paralysed the normal life in Jaffna on Friday.

Meanwhile another PLOTE member, Kandiah Ganesalingae (25) was shot and seriously injured by an unknown gunman in Batticaloa town yesterday.

Ganesalingae was admitted to Batticaloa hospital but Army sources said he might have to be air lifted to Colombo if his condition worsens.

SLMM Batticaloa office said they have received complaints from the Army about the incident and they would make inquiries into the incident if they could find evidences that parties to the Ceasefire Agreement has an involvement in it.
