Nalanda flounders after good start

Inspired by two enterprising innings by opener Sachitra Serasinghe (48) and Gihan Rupasinghe (79) Nalanda after a promising start faultered at the end of the first day of the 71st 'Battle of the Maroons' on 227 for 9 declared at the SSC grounds yesterday.

When bad light stopped play around 5.30 pm with 14 overs still to be bowled, Ananda were nought for no loss in 1.2 overs.

Nalanda's captain Yasas Hewavitharana won the toss and elected to bat and that luck lasted until shortly after the lunch interval. They produced their best batting when Serasinghe and Gihan Rupasinghe added 76 for the second-wicket. Gihan Rupasinghe displayed his batting prowess besides his left arm leg-spin which has brought him close to 100 wickets for the season. Rupasinghe with Madhava Warnapura added a further 45 runs for the fourth-wicket. Rupasinghe faced 118 balls and hit eight fours and three sixes while Serasinghe's 48 contained seven fours, facing 105 deliveries.

Medium fast bowler Charith Jayaweera was the pick of the Ananda bowlers with his 5 wicket haul. The match will be continued today at 9.45 a.m.
