Win against Royal gives Cambrians edge over Sebs

by Dilwin Mendis - Moratuwa Sports Corr.

The annual 'Big Match' between Prince of Wales' College, Moratuwa and St. Sebastian's College will be played on 11th and 12th March 2005 at De Soysa Stadium with play commencing on both days at 10 a.m.

This year, the hosts are Cambrians and being a government school they have to adhere to the Ministry of Education circular to play the match on a very 'low tone' due to tsunami disaster. Principal of Prince of Wales College S. J. P. Wijesinghe made a request from the Rector of St. Sebastian's College Rev. Fr. Bonny Fernandopulle and the Old Boys Association of Prince of Wales' College who are organizing the 'Big Match', to cut-out festive-mood activities before and during the match.

The entrance will be free of charge. Both schools have lost the lives of few students and several have been rendered homeless to the December disaster.

This is the 55th year that the two schools are meeting and the Cambrians have won six and Sebastianites two. The rest have been drawn. The last occasion Cambrians won was in 1977 under Pemalal Fernando. The Sebastianites last won in 1966 under Sarath Perera.

This year, both teams are keen on a decision as they are evenly poised. This year, Cambrians will be led by third year coloursman and allrounder Nalin Prabodha who has 560 runs under his belt. His deputy will be the wicketkeeper of the side Buddhika Asaranga who has 45 victims and so far scored 350 runs. Altogether there are four coloursmen including Isuru Gunasena and Pishan Hewage. Gunasena and Sanka Peiris are the highest wicket-takers with 30 each.

To open the batting will be Shashan Silva and Sanka Peiris. Fresher Rumesh Thirimanne has so far scored 530 runs and he was unlucky to miss a well-deserved century by one run against Royal College. Cambrians have played twelve matches this season and won two, rest drawn. They beat Kalutara Vidyalaya easily in the Lemonade Trophy first round match and they are somewhat cock-a-hoop after their glorious win against Royal. The victory over Royal is something that the Cambrians can be proud of and it is a plus point for them.

The Sebastianites will be led by under 19 poolist and fourth year coloursman and allrounder Dilhan Cooray. He is the son of former Sebastian captain and curator of De Soysa Stadium late Marian Cooray. His deputy will be another under 19 poolist Jehan Fernando who is also a good allrounder and coloursman. The other coloursmen in the side are Tony Rodrigo, Tharanga de Silva and Sanjeeva Fernando. There are six freshers.

Jehan and Sajith open the bowling and so far they have captured 46 and 45 wickets respectively. Sanjeeva Fernando and Aeyshan Perera will open the batting with Lakmal Fernando who is also the 'Stumper'.

Freshers Gerald Bennet and Satchinta Cooray had a very good season with the bat and Bennet has passed the 500-run mark while Cooray has scored 600 runs. Dilhan, Satchintha and Bennet have scored a century each.

The Sebastianites have played 13 matches and won three and lost two, the rest were drawn. In the Lemonade Trophy they played with Maris Stella and St. Josephs Colombo and were beaten by the Joshepians.
